Understanding How To Be Happy Is The Master Key To Happiness
14th June 2010
There are a few keys to happiness but here we will deal with the big one, and that is knowing the simplest, yet most important key. We will call this the master key to happiness and everyone has their own. The master key to happiness is in our own minds.
It is how we perceive ourselves and how we think about the world around us. This manifests as talking to ourselves and it is called our self talk.
We can say to ourselves that today I am going to be happy. Concentrate on that fact for 5-10 minutes a day while you shower, or drink your morning tea or coffee. Once you tell yourself that you are happy, you will start to feel it.
Happiness is a product of human thinking. It originates from within each of us. Unfortunately, we can all kill it off too, and many of us do so on a regular basis.
Once you decide to be happy, the change in your thinking starts to occur. This is the tipping point though simply because it is at this point that negative thinking will try to intrude. For some strange reason, humans can’t help thinking about the bad things around them. These seem to come out of nowhere and if you aren’t aware of when they are most likely to intrude, they have a strong tendency to take over our thinking and bring us down.
If these negative thoughts are just the bad things that you can expect from your day you will plateau out into a neutral way of being. Unless, of course, they deal with a particularly bad day ahead and one that you may have very little control over. But you can still control how you think about them.
Most people don’t have too many days like that unless you have been particularly bad. This neutral zone tips to the down side more than the upside but you do have control of it once you are aware of it. Once it arrives and it starts telling you all the things that you need or should do today, banish those thoughts immediately by reminding yourself of the list. And then congratulate yourself for being so clever as to have written it last night.
If some of the things are urgent that you should get done today, write them on a list the night before you go to bed. This has several benefits and they are all to do with your mind. One, they stop you from dwelling about them because you have safely written them on a list. Two, as you write, say to yourself that that’s tomorrows job when you get to work, leave work, during the day or whatever. It is important that you let each day take care of itself. It will anyway, but you can do it easy or hard; it all depends on how you talk to yourself about it.
To remove or improve neutral thoughts, acknowledge them by being aware of them and then saying something nice to yourself. Even if you simply say to yourself what a great tea or coffee maker you are! Just say something nice to yourself.
I’m sure we are both aware here that these conversations are taking place in your head. It simply doesn’t do at all to get a reputation for mumbling to yourself or worse, answering your own questions out loud!
Enjoy your conversations with yourself. You now have the master key to happiness, and I wish you peace when you use it wisely.
